HVAC Design Workshop
From Concept Planning to Detailed Design
A practical, project-based HVAC design training for MEP engineers
HVAC Design Workshop is created for engineers who want to understand HVAC design in a clear, practical, and structured way.
Many engineers know the theory, but when it comes to real projects, they struggle with where to start, how to select the right system, how to prepare calculations, and how to convert design thinking into proper drawings and schedules.
This workshop is designed to bridge that gap.
Through this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to approach HVAC design from concept planning through detailed design, with reference to local UAE codes, project requirements, and international standards.
The focus will not only be on understanding HVAC concepts, but also on applying them through a sample project. Participants will go through the complete design process, including calculations, selections, schedules, and drawings normally required in professional project submissions.
What You Will Learn
Concept Stage
- Understand how to perform preliminary load calculations using building parameters.
- Learn how to evaluate HVAC system proposals such as DX, VRF systems and air-cooled chillers.
- Understand practical limitations such as piping restrictions, space requirements, equipment locations, and electrical loads.
- Learn how to plan spaces for chillers, pumps, FCUs, FAHUs, and vertical shafts based on routing and flow requirements.
- Understand how to calculate electrical loads for chillers, pumps, and FCUs using manufacturer catalogues and system flow rates.
Schematic Stage
- Learn how to prepare HVAC riser diagrams.
- Understand window schedules, glass properties, and U values.
- Learn how to perform ventilation calculations and select suitable FAHU units.
- Understand how to size louvers based on airflow, free area, and pressure requirements.
Detailed Design Stage
- Learn how to perform and validate HAP calculations.
- Understand how to prepare equipment schedules and indoor unit selections.
- Learn the basics of duct sizing, air outlet selection, and pump sizing where applicable.
- Understand how to prepare construction-ready HVAC drawings with proper coordination and design intent.
Key Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will have practical exposure to:
- Local code compliance and interpretation.
- Step-by-step HVAC system design for a sample mid-rise mixed-use building.
- Real project calculation methods and design decision-making.
- Preparation and validation of HVAC design deliverables in a professional manner.
- Common mistakes in HVAC design and how to avoid them.
This workshop is suitable for mechanical engineers, entry-level designers, and working professionals who want to strengthen their HVAC design fundamentals through a real project scenario.
